A Bit of Story and Tradition

Chex mix always takes me back to road trips and late-night card games with my family, but this version feels a little more grown-up and absolutely delicious compared to what you can buy at the store. Instead of using powdered seasoning packets, we build flavor from scratch with our own homemade seasoning mix! With garlic, dried herbs, butter, and a splash of Worcestershire sauce, it’s an incredibly easy, endlessly customizable snack that makes an excellent gift, potluck dish, or trail snack for your next camping trip.

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Corn and Rice Chex.

  • Bagel Crisps. I use rye bagel crisps, but you can use any kind that you like!

  • Mini Pretzels. Try to get the Itty Bitty Mini Pretzels for a bite-size snack that is similar in size to the other crackers in this mix.

  • Cashews. While I prefer cashews in this mix, any unsalted nut can be used in its place such as peanuts, almonds, or pecans.

  • Butter.

  • Salt.

  • Onion & Garlic Powder.

  • Dried Herbs.

  • Worcestershire Sauce.

  • Corn Nuts. I love the subtle crunch that corn nuts add to this mix!

  • Sesame Sticks. For this recipe, I suggest using honey roasted sesame sticks but you can try other flavors— something spicy would add a little kick!

Tips for Success

  • Bake Low and Slow— to avoid burning the chex mix and keeping it crunchy, it’s best to bake at a low temperature around 250°F (120°C) for about an hour, stirring every 15 to 20 minutes.

  • Let the Mix Cool Completely— before storing the mix, make sure that it has cooled completely. This will help it to maintain its crunchy texture for several weeks.

  • Portion into small jars or snack packs— If you are bringing this chex mix along with you on a hike or camping trip, store it in small airtight containers that are easily to pack into your gear. It will store like this for 2 to 3 weeks!

Variations

  • Add everything bagel seasoning for a savory twist!

  • Mix in dried rosemary or sage for a more wintery version

  • Try spicing it up with a pinch of red pepper flakes and chili powder, or even some spicy sesame sticks

  • Swap crackers for parmesan crisps or grain-free options

  • Add maple or brown sugar for a sweet and savory blend
