Buttery Round Crackers

I asked on Instagram a little while back what our readers might want to learn more about when it comes to keeping a “from scratch” kitchen. One of the most requested recipes was for more homemade snack ideas! This is something I have personally only just started getting into, and I must say… I love it! Making snacks at home is so much easier than most people think. Crackers are my new favorite little treat for us, and they come in handy for little hands that need something to help tide them over until supper time. These crackers are a similar take on Ritz buttery round crackers. I used my smallest size biscuit cutter to mimic their shape.

ingredients & recipe:

  • 1 egg

  • 1/3 cup milk

  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/3 cup butter, cubed

  • coarse sea salt for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS:

  • Preheat your oven to 300 degrees F.

  • In a mixing cup, whisk together the egg and milk. Set aside.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

  • With a pastry blender, cut in the cubed butter until coarse crumbs are formed. Add the milk and egg mixture and mix in until a dough forms.

  • Knead the dough until all of the flour has been incorporated and the dough becomes smooth.

  • Roll out the dough into an 8x8 inch square. Fold the square into thirds. Roll out into an 8x8 inch square again, then roll out. Repeat this again and divide the final square into two equal pieces.

  • Roll each piece out to a large 12x12 inch square. Poke all over with a fork; the closer the marks, the flatter the crackers! Cut crackers into shapes. You can use a small biscuit cutter, or cut into triangles or squares or use cookie cutters.

  • Place the crackers about 1/4 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets. Brush lightly with a bit of water and sprinkle heavily with coarse sea salt.

  • Bake for 25 minutes or until golden. Let sit on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes before moving to a wire cooling rack. Allow the crackers to harden and cool completely before storing in a container or bag with an airtight seal. These will last about 1-2 weeks, depending.

While these do not taste identical to Ritz crackers, as they are a bit less soft and not as buttery flavored, they still taste amazing - like a real cracker! My favorite thing about them is that they do not contain any of the highly processed ingredients and preservatives that you would find in a store bought alternative. I know exactly what is in them, which means they’re a bit healthier for my family. You can play around with this recipe to make it more unique, too! Add some herbs or cracked pepper or even some sesame seeds would be tasty!
