Maple Banana Oatmeal: Easy, Healthy Breakfast

A Classic Breakfast:

Oatmeal has been a staple breakfast for centuries, loved for its heartiness and health benefits. Traditionally, oats were used to fuel long days of work, providing slow-releasing energy to keep hunger at bay. In New England, where maple syrup is a cherished ingredient, it was only natural to drizzle this golden nectar over a steaming bowl of oats.

Bananas add a natural sweetness and creamy texture, making this dish feel indulgent while remaining incredibly wholesome. The combination of warm oats, caramelized banana, and rich maple syrup is a nod to old-fashioned breakfasts with a modern, nutrient-packed twist.

Gathering Ingredients:

  • Water or Milk.

  • Rolled Oats. You will want the old-fashioned kind for this recipe, though steel cut oats or instant oats can be substituted. Cook according to the package directions depending on the type of oats you are using!

  • Brown Sugar. You can omit this or replace it with an equal amount of maple syrup.

  • Maple Syrup.

  • Cinnamon.

  • Salt.

  • Bananas. You will want to use fresh, firm bananas for this recipe. Overripe bananas will be too soft to caramelize properly.

  • Coconut Oil. If you do not have coconut oil on hand, another neutral baking oil can be used such as vegetable oil or canola oil.

  • Toppings: maple syrup, toasted pecans or walnuts, peanut butter, chocolate chips, toasted coconut, heavy cream

How to Make Maple Banana Oatmeal:

Step One: In a medium saucepan, combine the water or milk, oats, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, and salt. Bring the mixture to a boil and then reduce to a simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent the oatmeal from cooking to the bottom of the pan. Continue to cook over low heat until the oatmeal has thickened.

Step Two: Meanwhile, begin making the maple caramelized bananas. In a large skillet, heat the oil until it begins to shimmer, about 2 minutes. Whisk in the maple syrup until well combined. Then, add the sliced bananas in a single layer. Cook the bananas over medium heat for about 5 minutes per side or until the turn golden brown.

Step Three: Serve the warm oatmeal topped the caramelized bananas, a splash of heavy cream or milk, and any other desired toppings.
