Barley, Pea, and Lentil Soup in a Jar Mix

I love bringing a hostess gift to gatherings. For the past few years we have had a little Friendsgiving celebration with our neighbors, and it is such a fun way to say how thankful we are for good friends and get a little creative in the kitchen with less traditional menu items! If you are having a holiday meal away from home this year, whether at your grandma’s house or a dear friend’s place, it’s always a good idea to bring a little gift to say thank you for them allowing you to enjoy time spent in their home. It takes a lot of work to prepare a big meal for everyone, clean the house, and make sure everyone feels welcome!

This soup in a jar mix is a wonderful gift, as it is shelf stable for months and months, makes a delicious and easy meal that can be enjoyed at any time, and it’s really quite beautiful on the shelf (even if they never use it!).

ingredients & recipe:

MAKES ONE BALL® QUART JAR

  • 1 cup split peas, divided

  • 1 cup lentils, divided

  • 1/2 cup pearled barley, divided

  • 1/2 cup short cut pasta, divided

  • 1/4 cup onion flakes, divided

  • 1/4 cup white rice, divided

  • 2 bay leaves

  • 1 tbsp Italian seasoning

  • 3 chicken bouillon cubes

  • Tag that reads: Add 1 lb shredded chicken or ground beef, 28 oz diced tomatoes, 2 cloves garlic, 15 oz tomato sauce, 3 quarts chicken stock, and salt and pepper to taste.

DIRECTIONS:

  • Divide each ingredient measurement in half, with the exception of the bay leaves, Italian seasoning, and the bouillon cubes. Layer each halved ingredient in the order listed inside of the quart jar.

  • On top, place the bay leaves, Italian seasoning, and bouillon cubes.

  • Seal the jar with the lid and ring, top with a piece of cute fabric, and attach the soup recipe tag (provided below for you to print!)

  • NOTE: Please do not make and heat soup directly within the jar, due to a risk of thermal shock. Use is for dry storage only.

So easy, right? I love giving these or little cookie mix jars as teacher gifts as well. It’s something different than a coffee mug!

I used a traditional Ball® Quart Jar to house my soup mix. There are so many pretty ones to choose from, so be creative! Who would you give this soup in a jar mix to?

xoxo Kayla
