Apple Butter Glazed Roast Ham
What inspires you to cook? Is it a love of food from your childhood, recipes passed down from your grandma? Perhaps its a certain style of cuisine, like French cooking or Asian cooking? I tend to become inspired by television shows, movies, and books that I take in. It’s what started my journey with food blogging in the first place. I fell in love with Outlander and wanted to learn more about 18th century style foods, and it really just spitballed from there.
Recently, I took a deep dive into The Witcher on Netflix and it felt like I had returned to a spark of so many stories and media that I loved years ago. I may not look like it, but I spent quite a bit of time in high school playing games like Skyrim and Dragon Age and was a huge fan of Game of Thrones. I have a lot less time to binge watch shows nowadays, but I decided to give The Witcher a try and absolutely loved it! And there it was - an inspiration to look into medieval style foods.
This was the result, a mix of more primitive style yet still entirely prairie fashioned recipes, or a ham made with the simplest of glazes. Enjoy!
This ham, while not much to look at, is a picture of a labor of love. We raised the hog, killed it, butchered it, cured it, and smoked it. Sometimes I still cannot believe that the pork we have been eating came from our little hobby farm, and it fills me with pride and gratitude. This was about a 3.5 lb boneless ham roast that I cured for 7 days and my dad smoked with applewood. This paired really well with the apple butter I made back in September from apples on our farm. It is such a simple thing, to grow and make and eat the food from your farm, and it makes me feel so completely overjoyed. This recipe is a wonderful way to use up the preserves that you made over the summer and autumn months!
