Lemon Basil Infused Cleaning Vinegar

Do you clean with vinegar? When I first started this blog, one of my goals as a homemaker was to switch a majority of our cleaning supplies over to more natural options, or at the very least, to make most of them myself! Vinegar makes an excellent replacement for all purpose surface cleaners as it naturally disinfects and polishes. I love it for in the bathroom, on kitchen surfaces, in the laundry to soften clothes, and for a streak free window cleaner. It’s the main ingredient we use for keeping our home fresh and tidy as well as its many uses in the kitchen.

Infusing vinegar is incredibly easy. I have shared lots of fun mixes for this over the years, like this Holiday Spice Infused Cleaning Vinegar, Rosemary Citrus Infused Cleaning Vinegar, and Lemon Rosemary Cedarwood All Purpose Cleaner.

what you will need:

  • 2 quart jars with lids and bands

  • saved rinds from 4-6 lemons

  • 8-10 sprigs of lemon basil or any basil

  • 2 quarts distilled white vinegar

directions:

  • Place the lemon rinds and basil into the quart jars. Pour the vinegar over the lemons and basil until they are completely covered.

  • Close the jars and shake. Store in a spot out of direct sunlight such as a pantry cabinet. Let the vinegar infuse for at least 2 weeks and up to 4 weeks before using. The longer it infuses the better!

  • To use: Strain the vinegar and place into a spray bottle to use directly or mix into other homemade cleaners. Strained vinegar will last for about 6 months.

This is a highly concentrated cleaner, which I do use at its full potency. If you are cleaning a surface like stone, then you may want to add distilled water to the infused vinegar at a 1:1 ratio.

The basil is growing abundantly on the farm this year, so it felt only right to put a little bit of Mrs. Burns’ Lemon Basil into the mix.
