Video: An Autumn Equinox Party

Thursday evening we celebrated the autumn equinox, the first day of fall, when the sun aligns directly with the Earth’s equator and gives us approximately 12 hours of day and 12 hours of night across the globe. This time of year has been celebrated since the earliest human civilizations began, as far back as the Pagans in ancient Britain and the Ancient Greeks. The harvest is always something worth celebrating, in our opinion, as we are so thankful for everything that the growing season has given to us. We know that the time for rest is coming soon!

This year, we wanted to focus less on the more commercial holidays and find ways to celebrate the more ancient of days, listening to the rhythms of the seasons. We moved one of our long harvest tables outside and filled it with beautiful pumpkins from our patch and flowers from the gardens. It was a beautiful evening and reminded me of my wedding.

Jill created a gorgeous swag to hang above our table and filled with dahlias, snapdragons, zinnias, and other flowers from the garden. I love the autumnal colors that she chose, hues of wine, deep pinks, blushes, coppers, and pumpkin. The beeswax candles we made for this special evening looked beautiful on the table, and they were so magical once the sun set and were the only light source that we had in the darkness.

I made a pot of chili over the fire and cooked a large pan of cornbread. I do not have a recipe to share with you today, as I still need to perfect a few things. I hope to share it soon. The chili was very good! I filled it with sweet and hot peppers that my dad recently picked from our vegetable garden. Kyle and I recently picked up some gorgeous purple skinned sweet potatoes from a local market that were grown here in Iowa; they were so beautiful I had to try them! It makes me laugh that the things I get excited about nowadays are beautiful produce and interesting ingredients.

I do not have many sources for decor to share with you, as everything that we use is generally thrifted or found. I make a truly terrible design/decor blogger! If anything, I hope that these photos and video serve as a bit of inspiration for your next autumn celebration.

The equinox is a wonderful time to celebrate. For many modern gatherings, it is a custom to light candles and not use electric lights for the entirety of an evening. We also like to adopt the tradition of turning off our phones and television and reading books or playing games together. It is a nice way to unplug and unwind from our daily modern lives and connect back to this place we call home. I hope that you had a wonderful equinox, too!

What is your favorite things to celebrate in autumn? Do you have a special local festival you go to?

xoxo Kayla
