How to Make a Felt Pin Cushion
I think pin cushions can be so sweet, but I am often not a fan of the manufactured kind from the store. They always come in such bright colors, which is fine if you like that, but I tend to lean more toward warm muted and earthy tones. I thought it might be cute to make my own pin cushions using my stash of wool felt, and I was right! It was so quick and easy to make these, and I think they are so precious. About the size of the palm of my hand, they make a fairly large surface for keeping pins and needles. I filled with whole flaxseed as an affordable and more natural filler over something like poly-fil. You can make these in about an hour or two!
what you’ll need:
Wool Felt
Embroidery Thread
Embroidery Needle
Scissors
Whole Flaxseed
DIRECTIONS:
Using a round cookie cutter or freehand, draw a circle on a piece of paper to create a pattern. This will be the base shape of your pin cushion. Cut out the circle and pin it to your wool felt. Cut out two wool felt circles.
For the design on top, you can create a pattern on a piece of paper or cut them freehand. I chose to make a spool of thread and a little primitive sheep. The shapes are very basic and easy to recreate.
Stitch your design onto one of the circles with coordinating colors of embroidery floss.
Using the blanket stitch, sew the two circles together with the design facing outwards. Leave a few inches not sewn.
Fill the little cushion with whole flaxseed. Sew closed using the blanket stitch. Knot off.
What design will you put on top? I thought a mushroom might be cute, too! If you end up using flaxseed for a filling, like me, know that they can be warmed in the microwave! Flax is an excellent retainer of heat. These would make cute little hand warmers for your coat pockets, wouldn’t they?
Happy crafting!
